If you are sanding it, its pretty slow going so its harder to accidently go too far. How do I know where to do it, when when to stop?, and how might I best moisten the hide before braining? And don't expect to have much left in your hands for banjo until its done. i would recomend only tanning deer hair off. Deer hides aren't great hair on anyhow unless they're just for looks and not use. Hair on hides are very difficult to do with brain tanning. After 30mins give the rack a quarter turn. The second you leave it the whole thing will catch on fire of course. Use rocks to keep the tarp down around the smoke hole. Off to one side but still under the edge of the tarp dig a hole. Cover it with something, canvas oil tarp works well. Set the frame on cinder blocks to be a few feet off the ground, hair side up. To smoke, string it back up in the frame. If there is any moisture at all left when you stop working it it will endup stiff as a board.Ĩ. If you think its done you are halfway there. A deer hide averages about 10 hours of constant stretching. But also not 100 degrees either or it will dry too fast. It is extremely hard work and climate will determine how long it takes. I'd get 3-4 people to spend the day working it in the frame with ax handles. You can't wring a hair on hide because it craps up the hair with brains/eggs.ħ. Use a paddle or somethin to squegee as much a possible put before out and work it dry. You can buy hogs brains and use them, or just use eggs as they work exactly the same way.ĥ. One brain is technically enough, but it can be nice to have extra. Whatever you squeegee off the hide with the paddle should be saved in the fridge for the next day. Mush the brain up with water, its not too crucial to have an exact amount. The good thing is that you can always repeat the braining at anytime if its not good enough.Ĥ. If the skin hasn't been thinned enough there is no chance of a successful tan because you won't be able to work it dry. Let sit overnight and repeat, then again. So far I have the hide all fleshed out nicely, and has been dried on a stretch rack, and now the skin is completely (if not very close to) dry, and has the consistency of poster board. Hey BHO!
